INTERNATIONAL HEARING DOG. At the beginning of this year the OBG Lions Club voted to sponsor a Hearing Dog. We have worked to raise funds all year and it is time to tell you all about the International Hearing Dog, Inc. Sometime in 1974 in Minnesota the first idea of training dogs to assist deaf was started. Agnes McGrath, a dog trainer, was working at a kennel in White Bear Lake when a deaf lady came to the kennel to see if a hearing dog could be trained for her. The lady had a dog that worked naturally for, but it had died of old age. With the help of the local Lions, Agnes trained the first six hearing dogs in Minnesota. When monies ran out, the project was taken on by the America Humane Association, which along with Agnes, received a grant to conduct a four year pilot study in Colorado. The study was completed in 1979 and on May 7th International Hearing Dog was formed as a non-profit organization with Agnes as President and Martha Foss as Vice President. Today, over 950 animal shelter dogs have been trained by International Hearing Dog to assist deaf people throughout the U.S. and Canada. Imagine you are a deaf parent with a new baby and cannot hear your child’s cries. A trained hearing dog restores indepen- dence and awareness to its deaf master by responding to many otherwise unheard sounds. IHDI trains dogs to assist deaf/blind individuals (in the home only) by guiding slowly to the source of the sound whether it is a smoke alarm, or doorbell or a welcome phone call. There is a waiting list of six month to a year for a dog because each dog is custom trained to meet the needs of each applicant. Dogs trained for persons with special needs may require more time. Because of the quality of its program, International Hearing Dog was chosen to provide training for Japan’s first hearing dog program. With a growing need for its professionally trained dogs, International Hearing Dog looks forward to the future and many more years of service to persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. As you can see, Lions are working hard to assist the blind and the hard of hearing. This is just the tip of the iceberg, there is so much more that Lions are doing. Keep up the good work. WE SERVE
